What is wrong with society?

I really need someone to tell me why people in the entertainment and sports industries make so much money, while the average American is losing everything they have worked so hard for. I just don't believe there should be such a wide gap in the earnings of the average American working stiff and those that are glorified. I realize that we need entertainment to distract us from our mundane lives and I also understand that a lot of the entertainment and spots personalities donate to worthy causes, but I still do not believe they should make millions of dollars a year while people are losing their homes and going hungry. I believe we need some economic re-structuring. This country was built on the backs on the average American. Tell me, what real benefit, other than escape from reality, does the entertainment industry give us? How does it better society to spend hundreds of millions to make a movie or fund sporting events? The fact that the majority of Americans are struggling and the rich make up such a small portion of the population, how is this continuing?
